Church Altar Screen De-Installation and Crating

Church Altar Screen De-Installation and Crating

Art + Collectibles, Commercial

Episcopal Church of The Redeemer in Bryn Mawr, PA contacted the Precision Crating team of crating experts with an unusual project: de-install and package their altar screen for safe-keeping during scheduled renovations. A visual centerpiece, the altar screen is an often richly-decorated partition that separates the nave (middle of the Church) from the chancel (space around the altar).

Challenge:

This particular altar screen consisted of bronze, brass, and semi-precious stone elements—making it critical to create a packing scenario that would ensure the piece would not degrade while in long-term storage.

Process:

Our team of specialists first wrapped the screen components in Corrosion Intercept, a Polyethylene film embedded with highly-reactive copper particles which prevents metals wrapped within it from all kinds of corroding gases. The film, in turn, serves as an internal micro environment for each component. Our experts then placed the individual components into custom-built watertight crates lined with custom-fit strata cell foam interiors.

Results:

The MSS Precision Crating team successfully de-installed and packaged the fragile components of the altar screen for storage.

Over the course of the years since its establishment in 1978, MSS has provided a variety of museum-quality art and miscellaneous item crating services to a broad spectrum of diverse clients, including commercial properties such as churches and special purpose buildings. We provide flexible, certified, custom-engineered crating and artwork packaging on demand.
