COVID-19: Moving & Storage Industry and Critical Infrastructure Workforce

COVID-19: Moving & Storage Industry and Critical Infrastructure Workforce

April 18, 2020

The Department of Homeland Security has officially clarified any ambiguity regarding the moving and storage industry's place among the Critical Infrastructure Workforce. On April 17, 2020, they updated their Guidance on the Essential Critical Infrastructure Workforce: Ensuring Community and National Resilience in COVID-19 Response.  After three revisions, the guidance designates, “workers responsible for the movement of Household Goods” as essential under “Residential Shelter Facilities and Services." Many states and municipalities reference the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) Guidance, using it to determine which companies are deemed “essential” and can continue normal operations.

Thank you to the American Moving & Storage Association (AMSA) for tirelessly advocating for a clear designation regarding Household Goods Operators. In a time of great confusion and requirements that vary among regions, their work on our behalf to ensure our industry's place among the Critical Workforce has been vital.

Of course not all states reference and enforce CISA Guidance; MSS will continue to monitor those areas as well.
